Winnetka Bowling League, a band I had recounted seeing in a much smaller setting at the previous radio station I had been working at. While time had passed from that single “Kombucha” I had first heard about some odd years ago, in 2019. They returned last year in full force with a full-length album entitled “Sha La La” and a few reimaginings of the track “This Is Life” earlier this year, including a live rendition and an acoustic version of the track. The album sees Winnetka Bowling League bring back their infectious sun-soaked indie sounds.
My favorite track on the album is “Breakfast For Dinner”, a track that finds solace in comfort and loving vibes nestled in an absolute indie pop banger. This idea of calling to show some love on mundane ideas like matching or breakfast for dinner, in case something horrible happens. A relatable feeling for me personally, the idea of telling someone you care because you truly do not know what could happen in the next hour, or let alone a plane ride to anywhere.
As previously mentioned, they returned earlier this year in February with a couple of new versions of the track “This Is Life,” which was track 11 on the album “Sha La La.” If you haven’t heard their new album, give it a listen if you love indie pop that almost requires you to turn it up; it’s truly not an album to sleep on.
So as I headed out to Chicago and saw they were opening for Still Woozy, I had to be there. The band reflects all of those fun indie vibes in the best possible way live. Hearing “Breakfast for Dinner” live particularly hit me in a spot I wasn’t expecting. As well as getting to hear one of my favorite tracks from the band “CVS”. I left feeling full of bright summer sunshining vibes despite it being 2 AM.
While at the moment, Lollapalooza was their only U.S. date I could find listed. I will be chomping at the bit to see them live again. If they come to a city near you, this indie powerhouse of a band will not be one you’ll want to miss out on. The show will leave you feeling recharged in the best possible way.
